Ghost lamp
Ghost lamp is a collaboration project between Garbage Kids and our Finnish friend Joonas Pavinianen, who visited us in Tbilisi in January 2021 to create something together.
After a bit of brainstorming we came up with the ghost lamp idea, a lamp which is also a private space for reading and working. The lamp has a character that looks like someone directly from the Moomin books (popular children stories in both Estonia and Finland, written by Tove Jansson), a wintery version of the Groke (Mörkö in Finnish). The lamp is tall and hairy from the outside, small and cozy from the inside.
The ghost lamp fabric has thousands of individually hand stitched jute strings attached to it. Just the fabric took a month to make.
The lamp structure is made of recycled oak beams from a dismantled staircase. The dome is papier mache and plastered to tightly fit the wood it stands on.
Technical information:
The piece is made out of leftover oak stair beams, beech wood and plaster cast dome. The fabric is 100% cotton, with thousands of hairs (made out of jute string) hand stiched to the lamp.
This piece is no longer available.
