Chess
The chess sets are a part of our small collection on ancient board games, where we make games that have stood the test of time.
All the sets are named after the cities they were carved in.
The Rome chess is hand carved, using leftover and fallen wood from both Estonia and Georgia. During the exhibition in Rome we also had a few tutorials for people to carve their own pieces. The character of each pawn distinctly different, depending on the person carving them.
The Milan chess sets idea came from a necessity, to play chess during our exhibition at the Milan Design Festival 2023. An obsession that Luka took on to prove that he can make a full set in just a few days, carved out of scrappy and soft pine.
The Valga chess set was carved from a willow next to the Valga Architecture residency, that fell over with a summer storm. Currently this is residing in the residency, meant to be played by the artists and creatives in the house.
